For Your Needs

What are Individualised Living Options (ILO)?

Individualised Living Options (ILO) is NDIS funding that helps you explore and design the living arrangement that's right for you. ILO focuses on how you want to live and who you want to live with, rather than just providing a physical dwelling.

How ILO Works

ILO has two parts:

  • Exploration and Design: Working with you to explore different living options and design your ideal living arrangement
  • Implementation of Supports: Funding for the supports needed to make your chosen living arrangement work

Who is ILO For?

ILO may be right for you if:

  • You want to explore different living options beyond traditional supported accommodation
  • You need help to design your ideal living situation
  • You want more choice and control over where and how you live
  • You want to live in your own home or community with appropriate supports

Types of Living Arrangements with ILO

Living with Others

This could include:

  • Living with family members with support
  • Co-residency (living with someone who provides some support)
  • Living with housemates or peers
  • Host arrangements (living with a person or family who provides support)

Living Alone

With appropriate supports such as:

  • Drop-in support
  • Overnight support
  • Remote support or monitoring
  • Assistive technology

The ILO Process

1. Exploration and Design

This stage involves:

  • Understanding your goals, preferences and needs
  • Exploring different living options
  • Meeting potential housemates or support providers
  • Designing your ideal living arrangement
  • Creating a detailed proposal for your NDIS plan

2. Implementation

Once your plan is approved:

  • Setting up your living arrangement
  • Establishing support systems
  • Training support workers if needed
  • Ongoing review and adjustment of supports

How to Get ILO in Your NDIS Plan

To include ILO in your NDIS plan:

  • Discuss your living goals with your NDIS planner or Local Area Coordinator
  • Complete the NDIS Home and Living Supports Request form
  • Provide evidence showing why ILO is the right support for you
  • Work with a provider to develop your exploration and design proposal

Frequently Asked
Questions

Individualised Living Options (ILO) under the NDIS helps you design and implement your ideal living arrangement. Below are some common questions about ILO.

  • What is the difference between ILO and SIL?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) is funding for support services in shared living, while Individualised Living Options (ILO) is funding to explore, design and implement a wider range of living arrangements, including living alone or with family. ILO focuses more on the design of your living situation rather than just the support services.
  • Can I get both ILO and SIL funding?
Generally, you cannot receive both ILO and SIL funding for the same living arrangement. However, in some cases, you might have ILO for exploration and design, and then SIL for ongoing support if you choose a shared living arrangement. Your NDIS planner can advise on what's appropriate for your situation.
  • How long does the ILO process take?
The exploration and design phase typically takes 3-6 months, depending on the complexity of your situation and the living options you're considering. The implementation phase begins once your plan is approved and can vary based on the living arrangement you've chosen.
  • Can I use ILO to modify my current home?
ILO funding is primarily for support services rather than home modifications. However, if home modifications are needed as part of your living arrangement, these would typically be funded separately under the Capital Supports budget in your NDIS plan.
  • What happens if my living needs change?
ILO is designed to be flexible. If your needs change, you can request a plan review to adjust your supports. The exploration and design process can be revisited to help you design a new living arrangement that better meets your current needs.
